Programme for the Endorsement of Forest CertificationTM (PEFC) Chain of Custody

Bunbury Fibre Exports (BFE) maintains certification to Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification™ (PEFC™).

BFE processes log resources and exports high quality woodchips from the Port of Bunbury. BFE's objective is to produce export woodchips using environmental best practice.

The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) Principles and Criteria provides an objective basis of assessing quality based management applied across land and plantations, incorporating sound environmental practices, taking into account conservation, social, cultural and economic values.

BFE is committed to managing harvesting operations and produce export woodchips according to the PEFC Principles.

Additional information on BFE approach to PEFC Certification may be found in the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Policy (pdf).

What is PEFC TM Forest Certification?

PEFC Forest certification is a system which can be used to independently assess forest management practices against predetermined principles and criteria to provide consumers with confidence that timber products have been sourced from sustainably managed forests.

Why Certify Forests?

The principles and criteria used in forest certification seek to balance environmental, social and economic values and benefits of forests. Environmental criteria recognise that forest management should:

  • Conserve biological diversity and its values, water resources, soils, unique and fragile ecosystems and landscapes;
  • Maintain ecological function and integrity of forests; and
  • Protect threatened and endangered species and their habitats

Principles and criteria of forest certification aim to ensure that human rights are respected.

Economic criteria state that forest managers should seek to achieve an optimal use and local processing of the forest's diversity of products, minimise waste in harvesting and on-site processing, and strive to strengthen and diversify the local economy, avoiding dependence on a single forest product. The rate of harvest shall not exceed levels which cannot be permanently sustained.

What PEFC™ Means to our Customers

Bunbury Fibre Exports (BFE) is proud to have been made a certificate holder of the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification™ (PEFC™). The PEFC is a non-profit organisation devoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world's forests. The PEFC has developed an Australian Forestry Standard for forest management certification.

The PEFC Council (the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) is the worldwide organisation promoting sustainable forest management through forest certification and labelling of forest based products. Products with the PEFC claim and/or label deliver confidence to customers and the end consumers that raw material originates in sustainably managed forests, recycled material, and/or controlled sources.

The PEFC Council provides endorsement of national forest certification schemes which are required to comply with the PEFC Council requirements subject to regular evaluations.
